The settlements we live in, the tools we use, the food we eat - these all affect the choices we make and the way we live, as well as the level of impact we make on the planet's finite resources. Inspiration for more sustainable design principles and practices can come from traditional wisdom and from observing how nature itself operates.

Drawing on their experiences working at Crystal Waters Permaculture Village, Morag and Max will discuss how we can, in a participatory and holistic way, design human-scale settlements and food systems based on permaculture principles that promote a healthy environment and create opportunities for meaningful work.

Janine Benyus will introduce the new field of biomimicry, a design discipline that seeks sustainable solutions by studying and then emulating nature's time-tested strategies. Besides helping our species earn a longer stay on the planet, biomimicry, like permaculture, has the potential to change the way we view non-human nature - not as a source of goods, but as a source of wisdom.

MORAG GAMBLE is Director of an innovative environmental design and education organisation, Sustainable Futures. She teaches and consults around the world and is Founding Director of the Crystal Waters College.

MAX LINDEGGER is a qualified permaculture designer, and has worked on the design and/or implementation of over 750 ecological properties, including the UN Habitat Award winning Crystal Waters Permaculture Village.

JANINE BENYUS is a life sciences writer and author of six books, including her latest--Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired By Nature.
